We rented a 2011 Kia Venga Diesel (6 speed standard) in the UK for 2 weeks and the fuel economy was well over 60 MPG, with city and highway. We did 1850 miles. so got a good feeling about the car. Did some motorways but only drove 65 to 70 miles an hour. We got passed by everyone except the Lorries !!

My question is why do the diesels here get such crappy mileage and are noisy also. Why can't we get 65 MPG???

The new 2009+ models have to meet very strict North American diesel emissions requirements. Most diesels that you drive around the world cannot be imported to Canada because of this. The up side to the new engines is how quite, smooth and clean they are, so you might be referring to the older diesels sold before 2009.
