2011 Ford Edge

By Zack Spencer     February 21, 2011

The Scoop

The Ford Edge has been a big hit for Ford ever since it was introduced in 2007. Built in Oakville Ontario, this mid-sized crossover vehicle was a perfect replacement for buyers who wanted something more refined than the truck-based Explorer. Here we are in 2011 with a major refresh for this successful product. Not content to update the front and rear styling, add a few interior tweaks and call it a day. No, Ford went to town on this important people mover, as they are a company on a mission to provide industry leading vehicles and innovation. On these fronts the Edge doesn't disappoint, in fact I chose this vehicle as my ''top Pick' in the mid-sized segment for my 2011 edition of my book ''Motormouth''.

The Skin

One of the reasons the Edge is so popular is the dimensions provide just enough interior space without being too bulky to park and maneuver. Even though the last model had a cohesive design, this new model is more dramatic highlighting a deeper grille, more expressive headlights, a wide array of wheel options and overall tidier packaging. The base model is only sold with FWD and starts at $27,999. The mid-rage SEL is offered with AWD and starts at $33,999, then there is the Limited and very aggressive looking Sport. Wheel sizes on the base, SEL and Limited are 17 or 18-inches, either painted, chrome or alloy. The Sport is fitted with 22-inch alloy wheels with black inserts. I do wish the Limited was available without chrome, not my favorite look, I prefer alloy.

The Edge has proven to be a very good vehicle and the quality scores are very good. the fact that you have a 2010 means that you have the more basic dash, which will be easier to use for someone who might not be technology savvy.

God choice

I have noticed that Ford Focus has a monitor that will listen to me ask my car what I want it to do. Or should I say is computer does?
But as most new cars are going the way of the mobile computer with everything in one screen in the middle of the dash this I guess would be a general question.

I like knobs! No not the type who cut you off in traffic and give you the finger to boot but things that I can turn. And buttons I like buttons and dials and levers and anything else that you can do with your hands that are proven techknowledge. But these new all in one computers to me seem to me just a bit too much of a good thing, at least for a car. I think the novelty would seem ware off and now you are stuck with yelling at your car to turn thing on and off and change stations etc. And what if you don't speak the language that the car understands?

And when blue smoke comes out from under the dash as the computer fries and it will inevitability will I can't thing that it's going to be cheap to replace. And not like a radio or even a heater or a/c you most likely can not drive the car with out it.
So what you do you think of all this new all in one computer stuff?

The trend is to use a centre monitor in new cars, even inexpensive cars. There are benefits to this including a back up camera, bigger radio readout and phone call information. The problem is that many manufacturers insist that the control of the system be done on the screen. The manufacturers that are the best at incorporating these screens still have buttons on the dash to change things quickly like the radio and heat. The new Toyota Camry is a good example of a nice balance between the two types of systems.
These screens are not going away and they will spread to all cars soon enough. The reliability of the components is good, it is the software like the MyFordTouch system that has had to be updated for all new 2013 models due to the overly complex and slow nature of the system.
