2012 Toyota Camry

By Zack Spencer     October 16, 2011

The Scoop

Over the last couple of years Toyota has had a bit of a rough go. First they had the recall problems surrounding several models with sticky accelerators, then floor mats bunching up under gas pedals, followed by more recalls. Just as life was getting back to normal, Japan was hit by a massive earthquake and deadly tsunami. As Toyota was dealing with their recall and production issues the automotive world kept moving forward with plenty of competitive products arriving, ready to steal market share from Toyota. Not a company to sit on their hands, Toyota set about updating many of their vehicles, so looks forward to twenty new or heavily updated Toyota/Lexus products coming over the next eighteen months. The Camry is one of the first to receive a refresh, and just in time, as it has some hot new competition, especially the sleek Hyundai Sonata.

The Skin

The 2012 Camry is built on the same platform as the outgoing model but every exterior piece is new, providing a fresh, cleaner design that removes some of the clumsiness of the last car. Sold with both 4-cylinder and V6 engines and a hybrid, the Camry has been given many exterior tweaks to improve aerodynamic efficiency, including under body panels to improve airflow. The sportier SE trim gets tasty looking 18-inch wheels instead of the base 17-inch wheel plus an edgier front spoiler and bolder fog lights. The rear suspension has been modified and weight has been shed in the process, delivering a crisper ride. The 2012 Camry might not have the curb appeal of the new Hyundai Sonata or Kia Optima but Camry owners might not be looking for bold, just a more stylish car.

Had the radio replace because of defects before the start of 2nd year of warranty, After few months of the three year total car warranty the radio had the same defects as the original stock radio, the Toyota dealer in Nanaimo replaced the first radio but would not replace it again because the vehicle warranty had expired, I have talked to 2010 owners and they had the same problems with their radio. I really think Toyota should replace the radio free of charge because the defects of original radio were never corrected ,Thank You

I hope you have the documents to back up the first warranty claim. What I would suggest is that you call Toyota Canada in Toronto and open a file with them. see what happens.

Hello Zack,

I hear (from your radio program) that you will be trying out a new 2013 RAV4 this week. According to the specs, a rear seat hip room was reduced by 3.5 inches, compared to the old model, making it by far the tightest small SUV rear seat . If you have a chance and time would you please check it out and either comment on your show or e-mail? I wander if this space is so much smaller, indeed, or there is something else to it (the way it is measured, perhaps). Thank you and regards,

Les

Yes they did reduce the size of the back seat to make more cargo space but having just driven in the new RAV, I can say that the reduction in size is not noticeable.

I have a Toyota Camry 2002,XLE,leader seats, fully-loaded, assembled in Japan. My question is two folds:- 1) Does this car come with a 4cyl or a 6cyl engine? I am confused because there is no indication that Toyota made any Camry, XLE with a 4cyl engine in 2002. Although I am told my Camry is a 4cyl, XLE fully 2002, I cannot find the Winter Tires that match my vehicle. Wherelse, it cleary shows that in 2001, Toyota made 4cyl XLE & 6cyl XLE Camry, leather seated, fully-loaded. But the tire-size for the 2001, 4cyl Camry, is 205/65/15R The confusing thing is that my car is supposedly a 4cyl XLE and is equipted with tire-size of 215/60/16R. Please help to clearify this confusion. 2) Why does the car have a tendency to experience a pulsting sensation while idling at the trafic lights?

Have a look at your insurance and registration and it should tell you the number of cylinders your car has. You can also call the dealership and ask them to look it up with your VIN #. Get the dealer to also check your rough idle, it could be as simple as a bad sensor.

I bought a 2010 toyota Rav 4 in 2010. I have taken it back to the dealer for all scheduled service since new. I have always done my own oil changes and I asked the dealer if i could do the oil changes and they told me that it must be done by the dealer only as the vehicle must have special Toyota oil only and if someone else does the job that the warranty would no longer be in play on the engine. Is this true?

You can do your own oil change and buy the oil from the dealer or buy approved oil as listed in your manual. It is better to have a receipt from a shop to verify that the work has done for with the warranty. It will be cheaper to take it to an independent mechanic to have the regular scheduled changes down and any other do yourself with ''Toyota'' approved oil.
