2012 Ford F-150 EcoBoost

By Zack Spencer     May 10, 2012

The Scoop

Pickup trucks are hard to review. Unless the person driving the truck has experience driving one day after day for serious work, they are at a disadvantage because there are limits how much can be achieved during a one week test. Then add in all the different, literally hundreds of thousands of configurations that a pickup can be ordered and it is easy to see how complex these machines are. In general terms there are trends, and one that is of utmost importance to anyone who relies on their truck for work is fuel consumption. If a businessperson spends less on fuel, they keep more in their bank account. Pretty simple. Ford believes they have a solution for pickup truck buyers who require the power and versatility of a full sized truck but also the fuel savings they crave. By placing a turbocharged V6 engine inside the best selling F-150, this vehicle delivers the torque of a Super Duty V8 with fuel sipping capabilities. Ford calls their turbocharged, direct injection engines ''EcoBoost''

The Skin

The EcoBoost motor is sold on selected regular cab models, the Supercab with back seats or the Supercrew seen here with four doors. Ford has a winning formula with their trucks so they don't mess much with the overall design. This 2012 model does have a new FX appearance package that takes the basic design and tweaks it to include black grille, blacked-out headlights, flat-black accents, 20-inch wheels and graphics on the box. For buyers considering this or any Ford F-150, it is advisable to include the very convenient retractable side step, which allows items to be placed or removed from the side of the box, saving the hassle of lowering the tailgate and climbing in. Ford too has made getting into the bed easier thanks to a stepladder that slides out of the lowered tailgate. Also integrated into the tailgate is a pop-up handle that provides a fabulous grip for getting into the back of the truck.

Hi, I am looking at and liking the 2013 Ford F-150. My question relates to the timing of buying a new vehicle in relation to the insentives Ford Canada has on a yearly basis.

I recall the employee pricing and other offers where you can save $10,000 +.

Does Ford usually have the same offers every year?

What are the best offers as far as buying a new vehicle and when do they happen?

Thanks!

These change from month to month but with the new Chevy and GMC trucks along with the all-new Ram, the pickup price wars might heat up again. There is no way of knowing. I'd wait until the new GM trucks arrive, this will get the market more competitive again.

I don't own this truck but one of my best friends does and he likes it a lot and has had no trouble with it. Maybe check an F-150 web forum to see what other people have to say about their experiences.

I've heard from three people that know someone that has the Ford 150 with the ford V6 eco boost motor, and they all rave about how good it is. I want one! but I am cautious, has there been any problems that have cropped up with this power plant? The ford dealer in Burnaby says it's the best motor anyone has, but he's also heavily trying to push my into a V-8 version, saying that it gets 20% better mileage than my '02 explorer sport. I check every tank since I bought the explorer, and I get annually slightly over 15 miles per gallon. NOt sure what that is in liters. I'm guessing that he's probably got too many v8 150's in stock? dunno. I am not towing anything (yet) and I need a newer vehicle as my 10 yr old explorer is starting to cost me repairs. (Air Cond. radiator last week: $669.00) If the eco-boost motor is reliable and gets better mileage than my explorer (what doesn't?) then I'd narrow my focus to the fords, and not look at the sierra's. I hate the look of the Chryslers! Are they getting too much power out of the eco boost? or was it purpose built to handle the higher pressures that come with turbo boosted engines?

The Ecoboost engine is built to a much higher standard than the turbo motors they use in cars. I love this truck. They had some early production issues but the new ones have proven to be very good.Check Ford F-150 chet rooms, or web forums to see what other owners say. When the vehicle isn't under load it can be fuel efficient and the V8's are probably not selling as well.

hi

i am going to buy a used truck, probably from a dealership so i can get the warrant (2009 to 2012)

couple of questions, i have been told from a few different sources that ford's are the most reliable / best trucks. do you agree with this? specifically the f150 4x4s

also, do you have a document on your site or a link to a guide to how to buy a used vehicle (questions to ask, things to avoid, etc.)?

All the North American trucks offer a lot, each with high and low points. I believe that Ford spends the most on research and development. I'd check on-line web-forums on Ford trucks to see what owners think.
