2010 Kia SOUL

By Zack Spencer     March 9, 2009

The Scoop

Canadians have a come to love compact cars and SUV's, good things come in small packages, especially inexpensive packages. There is a new category, the compact crossover with vehicles like the Dodge Caliber, Suzuki SX4 and Toyota Matrix that are proving to be popular. New to this class is the funky, inexpensive crossover called the Kia Soul. Prices start at $15,495

The Skin

Without question the Soul makes a statement and the kind of statement I like. This stylish crossover is targeted to the generation ''Y'' crowd or anyone else who is young at heart. The oversized headlights, square roof and equally stylish rear design looks like nothing else on the road, perfect for the latest ''me'' generation. The Base model comes with 15-inch wheels but top models come with 18-inch rubber.

I need a reliable, affordable vehicle that sits higher, is easier to get into. I chose the Kia Soul, and am considering buying a demo model from selloff.com. I commute 200km per day for 3 to 4 days per week. Just had a left hip replacement, so need some comfortable seats. Because of my rural location, I need to be able to carry STUFF.
and, because of my rural location, I believe I need an extended bumper to bumper factory national warranty. They want to charge me $2,000 for this. They also want $1,000 for the rust, undercoating, paint and upholstery application. they also want $400 for admin fees, then add GST for the whole thing, brings the KIA Soul to $18,700.
Is the extended warranty price and undercoating price a good deal? What about the admin charges?

Don't pay the admin fee or get the rust proofing done, save your money. Ask them if the warranty is from Kia or a third party? If it from a third party you can shop around on your own and it might be cheaper. Doesn't the car already come with a 100,000km warranty?
Good choice for a vehicle but what your is it?

Hi Zack, I presently drive a 2001 PT Cruiser that has 228,000K on it. I was just at the dealership yesterday and they informed me that it now needs the rack and pinion replaced for $1,400.00. I am wondering if now is the time to trade this in or just keep getting it fixed. I really like my PT and had planned on keeping it until it just wouldn't go anymore but have to be sensible money wise as well. I am 64 and retired, I live in High River, Ab. and travel into Calgary about once every 2 wks or so. I have thought of looking at the KIA Soul and would just like your advice as to what I should do. Being a pensioner, I do not have alot of disposable cash so have to keep that in mind. Thanks for any advice you can offer. Lynda

Any car with 230,000km's will need more repairs in the near future. The Soul is a great choice as an alternative. I think it might be time to say goodbye the PT....

Our new Kia Soul came with 18 inch tires on alloy rims. The tire shop told me that my
old 16 inch winter tires on steel rims would fit on this car and they do.
Now, a couple of people tell me that I should also have steel wheels nuts on the
steel rims instead of alloy nuts because the alloy ones will loosened faster ?

Any truth to that ?

Thanks

Jacques

I would go with the suggestion of the tire installer. I think you will be fine for the few short months you have them on.

Zak!
Listening to your show right now and heard older gentleman phone inquiring about upcoming Dodge Dart & what compact/budget car might be good for a larger man.

What about Kia Soul? Had mine for a couple of years. Wife and I love it. It's not perfect, but interior is roomy as hell. Great car for the money.

From the sound of his voice, I could tell that he wasn't into import cars but you are right, the SOUL is a fantastic product.

I am a 70yr old lady, looking to purchase 2012 vehicle. I presently drive a Honda civic but its too close to the road. I am wondering about the kia soul or comparative size vehicle and price range around $20 - 22 thousand. I do not do very much highway driving but need adequate trunk space for walker. I would appreciate your advice on some comparative vehicles with main focus on vision as i am also a short person. Reliability and warranty are also important features. Many thanks

The Kia Soul is a very good choice as it is higher off the ground and offers excellent visibility. Also have a look at the Toyota Matrix, it has a higher seating position, plus it will be easy to park and drive.
