2012 Honda CR-V

By Zack Spencer     November 23, 2011

The Scoop

As years go buy, certain models become part of the automotive landscape, like they were always there. The fastest growing segment of the Canadian vehicles is the compact crossover because they fill the vehicle requirements of most families. Built off car platforms, compact crossovers have efficient engines, yet with room and a ''go anywhere'' attitude that makes them attractive to men and women alike. It's amazing to realize that this segment of vehicle was only introduced just over a decade ago when the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV-4 burst onto the scene. 1997 marked the arrival of the Honda CR-V and since then it has been a favourite with Canadians, making it the second best selling Honda after the legendary Civic. 2012 marks the arrival of a fourth generation, heavily updated CR-V, with more power, room, refinement and features.

The Skin

With a fifty percent increase in compact crossover sales over the last five years, the importance of this CR-V should not be understated; this product is a big deal for Honda. Updating this legendary ''cute ute'' was an exercise in refinement, not a total reinvention. In order to achieve a more upscale approach, the designers actually made the CR-V shorter, yet trick the eye into thinking it is longer. The roof is now lower, with a steeper windshield and the lower body cladding has been smoothed for a more car-like design. The biggest change is to the side windows and rear hatch area. The glass at the back, corner of the CR-V has been elongated and sweeps upwards, conveying motion. The roofline extends farther back, producing a squarer back end also creating a larger cargo area. These are all cleaver tricks, making this new CR-V recognizable and more appealing.

I sent you a message earlier about the 2012 pilot with eco feature. i noticed that around 60 - 70 kmh the vehicle shimmies. i took it back to the dealer and they did a wheel balancing and then explained that this was a problem with the eco feature. i find it hard to believe that Honda engineering would let this out the door. what is your thoughts,, i have a hard time with spending 50k to have this problem

any idea

thanks

All the eco button does is hold the car in a higher gear for better fuel consumption. If you notice this, then run it in regular mode in the city and switch it on when you drive on the highway. It is probably resonant vibration. You van also try another dealer for a second opinion.

Help! Our Honda dealer has offered us twice this year an upgrade sale with incentives. Our 2006 Honda CRV has 58,000 km and when we bought it the big selling feature was that it was the last year the CRV was made in Japan. We have had no problems and have had regular service thru Honda. Most of our driving unfortunately is in the city with trips outside lasting 1-2 hours each way. We like the CRV and since we are seniors we ''may'' only buy one more vehicle or maybe not. Do you have any thoughts on this. Should we take them up on the offer or keep our 2006 CRV. Also, we have winter tires on rims and they probably won`t fit the new vehicle as I believe the tires are a bigger size. We are not planning on any road trips as we fly to the east or west coast for our trips. We ignored the first offer and they have just given us another one until October 31. Thanks for your help.

You didn't mention what the offer is??
The new CR-V is a a much better vehicle in every way compared to the one you have but with such low km's your current vehicle will last for many years to come. It comes down to what you want. If you like the idea of a newer, more modern vehicle with a few more features, then the new CR-V is very good. If you are happy with your current vehicle, then keep driving it.

Do you recommend extended warranties? We are considering buying a 2012 Honda CRV.
Thank you!

If you plan to keep the vehicle for a long time, you might want to consider it. To be honest, the CR-V is a very well made car.

We have a 2003 CRV. We bought it in '08 from it's original owner.
At the time of purchase the lock on the drivers door was a little
tricky. It seemed you had to try the key a number of times before it would
fully go in and unlock the door. (no push button door locks, fully manual)
Within months the drivers door lock would not work. We have to unlock the passenger door and reach across to unlock the drivers door.
I went to Honda and asked if there was a service bulletin on the door lock. No. Now, the rear door lock is starting to do the same thing.
I've never had a vehicle that the door locks failed.
The key works fine in the ignition, the passenger door and until very recently, the rear door.
Have you heard of Honda door locks failing? It will be an expensive fix and I'm against doing it on principle. Thanks.

I have not heard of this but having a new key cylinder installed in the door isn't too expensive, plus you will enjoy the car more if you can get into it easily.

Good morning:

I have been trying to locate the Cilajet dealer you mention in Delta. Am having some trouble with that.

I just bought a 2012 CRV.

Looking forward to your response naming the business, so I can contact them.

Best regards,

Lorraine
