The Cherokee is the compact utility or crossover SUV from Jeep. This 5-passenger utility has two available engines and several advanced all wheel drive settings to choose from. This is the Jeep for the masses, looking for inexpensive family transportation.

The latest Jeep Cherokee is the return of the less expensive and smaller Jeep under the Grand Cherokee. Ever since it was re-introduced, it has been a sales smash, selling in huge numbers. A big part of this is the attractiveness of the Jeep Brand but also the go-anywhere capability that Jeep instills in its vehicles.

The Cherokee is sold with two engine choices and several different drive systems. The base engine is a large 2.4L 4-cylinder engine with 184hp. This can be matched to either a FWD layout or several AWD systems. These range from a base Active Drive I AWD system with selectable terrain settings to a more aggressive Active Drive II system or the off-road ready and very capable Trailhawk version. This model also gets a unique front and rear design that enables better off-road ground clearance. All trim levels can be equipped with an optional 3.2L V6 with 271hp for roughly $1500 more.

In addition the Cherokee is equipped with a 9-speed automatic transmission for improved fuel economy. The 2.4L 4-cylinder with FWD is capable of 10.9L/100km (26mpg) in the city and 7.7L (37MPG) on the highway.

One of the standout elements of the Cherokee is the above average interior. This award winning design has soft touch materials, plenty of room and an available 8.4-inch uConnect in-dash infotainment system. This too is an award winning technology and is arguably on of the easiest system to master.

Standard Safety is covered with front, side, curtain airbags and knee air bags along with traction and stability control. Only the top models can be equipped with advanced safety systems like pre-collision detection, lane departure and automated parking systems.

The Cherokee starts at roughly $26,000 (US $24,000) and goes up to $34,000 (US $31,000) for the Trailhawk version. Keep in mind the V6 is extra.

The Cherokee burst onto the market and hasn’t looked back. This comfortable and capable Jeep ticks many boxes for many buyers, mostly the Jeep attitude it represents.

Some consumers don’t love the exterior styling, some find it too fashion forward and the 9-speed automatic were problematic initially but there have been many updates to this transmissions software to eliminate these concerns. The Cherokee is the affordable small SUV for the masses.
