The Fiat 500X is an all-new subcompact crossover, or SUV, to enter the market. This small SUV has room for 5-passengers and is available with all wheel drive, or AWD. The Fiat 500X shares the same platform as the Jeep Renegade and is offered with two engines, a 1.4L turbo 4-cylinder or a 2.4L 4-cylinder. The Fiat 500X crossover is fun to drive and brings some Italian flair to everyday driving.
The Fiat 500X is built on a shared platform with its American cousin, the Jeep Renegade. Both are built in Italy and also share many engines and components. It comes down to style, the Fiat is rounded and more European, and the Jeep is all-American design. This utility is part of a new trend towards smaller crossover vehicle. It is smaller than many compacts but not as small as others, like the Mazda CX-3. What buyers get in this vehicle is the ability to choose several engine and transmission choices, AWD and advanced safety features.
Powering the 500X are two engines, one a turbocharged 4-cylinder and the other a large non-turbo 4-cylinder. The first is a 1.4L turbo engine. This is a great little engine and it pumps out a solid 160hp and even more useful torque. This engine is matched to either a 6-speed manual or a 9-speed automatic. If the buyer wants an automatic a whole separate, larger and less efficient engine needs to be chosen. While this engine isn’t as thrifty, it is a lot of fun to use, and the 9-speed automatic is advanced technology. This 2.4L engine has 175 and makes this Fiat rather quick off the line. The 500X comes standard with FWD but all trims can be selected with AWD. Higher trim levels get the larger engine and, automatic but AWD system is still optional.
The base 500X is rated at 9.5L/100km (22 MPG) in the city and 6.9L/100km (31 MPG) on the HWY.
The interior layout is simple and easy to use and it has certain flair to the interior that makes it slightly different from much of the competition. This car can be equipped with all kinds of luxury features if the buyer chooses, like heated seats and steering wheel, leather seats, huge panoramic sunroof and the latest connectivity. Keep in mind this features can bring the price up dramatically. There are available 5 or 6.5-inch uConnect screens in the centre of the dash and an additional screen in the instrument cluster for quick reference. It should be noted that the uConnect system is one of the industries best, offering a simple and easy experience. The back seats is not large, either is the cargo area but this is perfect for a single person or couple, or as a second car.
Safety comes from standard front, side and curtain airbags and standard stability and traction control. Fiat offers advanced safety features like lane departure warning and forward collision warning with auto braking but these features are kept for the top models
The Fiat 500X can be a value vehicle with a starting price of roughly $22,000 (US $20,000) but it can get expensive quickly running up to $31,000.
The 500X is a great little vehicle to drive, it is a lot of fun and the larger 2.4L engine is more than up to the job. Much has been said about the 9-speed automatic in other FCA vehicle but it works well with this product. The fun and funky styling inside and out, sets this product apart and it has enough room for a single person or couple and AWD capability to enjoy the outdoors.
Pricing for this product is higher than many competitors and when loading up the 500X, the price can get out of hand. If the buyer keeps an eye on the must-have option, this fun utility can be very nicely equipped for around the $30,000. It might be part of a new bread of utility but this little Italian has a twist that makes it stand-alone.
