The Subaru Impreza compact sedan and hatchback are popular due to Subaru's all wheel drive technology. The Impreza is the foundation for the Subaru Crosstrek. The Subaru AWD system is a major selling feature for Subie.

The Subaru Impreza is totally unique in the compact car space because it comes with AWD, something not really offered by any other compact manufacturer, plus Subaru went to great lengths to make this car very fuel-efficient. The Impreza is sold as a hatchback or sedan.

Sold with an efficient 2.0L 4-cylinder engine and Subaru’s own, in house CVT. The engine puts out 148hp and the CVT ensures that the engine is in the optimal RPM for either efficiency or power. The Impreza can still be equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission but this setup limits the torque split to 50% front and back, where the advanced CVT can shift the torque to the wheels than need grip, it isn’t limited. This all comes together to produce good fuel economy.

It is rated at 8.5L/100km (28 MPG) in the city and 6.4L/100km (37 MPG) on the HWY when equipped with the CVT. These fuel economy numbers are similar to cars with only FWD, this car has power going to all four wheels.

The Impreza is a study in how to produce an easy to use design. The doors are big and open wide, the widows are large, the rear seats are roomy and the whole cabin feels spacious. All Impreza models get Bluetooth integration with streaming audio and a base 6.2-inch screen with backup camera or optional 7-inch screen with navigation. Satellite radio is also offered. And just like AWD, and available heated front seats.

Safety comes from standard front, side and curtain airbags and standard stability and traction control. What attracts many buyers to Subaru is the available EyeSight advanced safety system that allows this car to achieve a Top Safety Pick Plus rating from the IIHS. There are two cameras placed near the rear view mirror that are always watching and the car can automatically brake for the driver does nothing. This system also maintains a safe distance with the adaptive cruise control and also has lane departure waning

The Impreza sedan starts at roughly $20,000 (US $18,000) and the most expensive hatchback models are roughly 30,000 (US $24,000)

The Impreza is an impressive car due to an easy to use design, AWD traction, fuel-efficient engine and highly advanced safety systems.

The interior might be a bit dated or plain but it does the job, keep an eye out for an all-new Impreza soon.
