Mazda has two Skyactiv engines in the Mazda3. A compact car with good handling, amazing interior but not inexpensive. The Mazda3 is a compact sedan or hatchback sold as the Sport. With Mazda Zoom-Zoom design and Skyactiv efficiency, this car is a winner.

The Mazda3 is n award winning car sold as a sedan or 5-door hatchback. Both come with excellent handling and a refined interior as standard equipment. Mazda places high value on these aspects of its vehicles and it shows. On paper, some Mazda products can be more expensive than the competition, but in this car you get what you pay for.

This compact car is sold with two engine choices. The base engine is a 2.0L 4-cylinder with what Mazda calls Skyactiv technology. Basically the engine features high compression but runs on regular fuel thanks to direct injection technology. This produces a solid 155hp. There is a larger 2.5L version of the same engine, sold on higher trim levels, and this engine is good for 184hp. This car is sold with either 6-speed manual or automatic.

As mentioned, there is a priority placed on interior refinement, this car looks almost class above thanks to a 7-inch screen in the centre of the dash controlled by a central control knob. All models get Bluetooth and a backup camera and some can be equipped with navigation. The interior also features quality materials and can be equipped with rich colours.

The Yaris sedan is rated at 7.9L/100km (29MPG) in the city and 5.7L/100km (40 MPG) when equipped with the base engine and automatic transmission.

The base model is the sedan and it starts at roughly $16,000 (US $18,000) and the most expensive model, 5-door hatchback starts at roughly 26,000. (US $25,000)

Safety comes from standard front, side and curtain airbags and standard stability and traction control. The Mazda3 can be equipped with advanced safety features like blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and low speed autonomous braking but only on the top model. (The Mazda3 can be equipped with advanced safety features like blind spot warning system and rear cross traffic alert but as an option in the United States.)

Highlights

What can’t be over emphasized is the ride and handling of this fun to drive compact car. This is perfect for someone who needs a small car but still likes to be engaged. The interior is ahead of the competition in many ways.

The price is slightly higher than many competitors and top version can be expensive but this is almost a premium take on a compact car.
